The Director is responsible for the normal management of the Foundation, notably and among other roles, as direct and senior head of personnel and as responsible for the annual action plan and budget, undertaking the management, study and implementation of initiatives which are aimed at ensuring a normal and effective use of the Foundation with regard to its financial aspects.
The role of Deputy Director of Activities, which is currently vacant, directly depends on the Director, has the support of the Director’s co-ordinator. The responsibilities of this position are that of managing and coordinating the following areas:
The purpose of this department is to compile, preserve, classify and disseminate administrative and documentary material generated by the Museum, as well as material for record (minutes of meetings, correspondence, photographs, annual reports, etc).
This department fulfils the audiovisual requirements of the Museum’s activities, including: film showings, press conferences, lectures and events. It also produces photographs and videos for archive and/or dissemination in the press, the web and social media.
This department manages and makes available the Museum’s bibliographic holdings to the general public and researchers. It manages the ARTEDER Basque Art Database, an in-house project associated with the Museum’s general mission of encouraging research into Basque art and its dissemination.
The aim of this department is to manage the Museum’s artistic holdings and to contribute to knowledge and dissemination of its collection. It is responsible for the documentary and photographic archive, the registry and inventory of works in the collection, the supervision of their movement and the coordination of loans for the Museum’s temporary exhibitions.
The aim of this department is the conservation and, if required, the restoration of the works of art in the collection and of any cultural item housed at the Museum. This department also collaborates on the study of works of art and their dissemination to the general public and academic community.
This department implements educational activities and programmes which have the principal aim of promoting knowledge and dissemination of the Museum’s permanent collection and of the temporary exhibitions among the widest possible public.
This department is responsible for the coordination of the Museum’s temporary exhibitions programme: the conception and formulation of collaborative agreements; the coordination of loans, insurance and transport; the coordination of the curating of an exhibition and its associated documentation, financial management and the technical coordination of the installation.
The financial department manages the Museum’s economic resources, pursuing the aim of financial stability and budgetary balance through the control of incoming funds and the optimisation of the necessary costs for correct functioning. It ensures the fulfilment of accounting, fiscal and legal obligations within the required time-frames, in addition to implementing procedures for the management of the financial administration of budgetary procedures, accounting and administration of funds. It also manages the financial aspects of the Museum’s shop.
The aim of the shop is to contribute to the Museum’s self-financing through the sale of specialist art books, publications produced by the Museum and merchandising relating to the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions.
The Communication Section’s mission is to transmit the importance of the Museum and its activities through the formulation and ongoing management of the Communication Plan. Within its Marketing Plan this section also devises attraction, attention and fidelity strategies aimed at different sectors of the public and agents, in addition to the events programme. Finally, it manages the Publications Department.

The primary responsibilities of this department are those of preparing and facilitating to the media all information relating to the Museum and its activities, and of compiling information published on the Museum. It is responsible for organising press conferences, preparing press releases and dossiers and dealing with journalists. Online communication (website, newsletters, social networks) is part of its normal activity.
This department is responsible for planning and implementing the marketing plan, managing the Corporate Members programme and visitor attention, and devising strategies to attract visitors, as well as attracting and organising events. Its principal missions are those of attracting visitors and ensuring visitor and user satisfaction, in addition to establishing long-term relationships with entities and bodies that may have the potential to increase visitor numbers.
This department is responsible for the design, editing and printing of all the publications produced by the Foundation. It also manages the digital bookshop on www.museobilbao.com
The aim of this department is the management and development of human resources, both internal and external. Prevention of accidents in the workplace, work experience programmes and grants. It also manages the Foundation’s general services such as its internal ones, maintenance, lighting, systems and security.
This department is responsible for the preventative and corrective maintenance of the Museum’s air-conditioning and lighting systems, ensuring the correct lighting of the permanent collection and of all the temporary exhibitions.
This department of the Museum principally has a principally preventative function. It is responsible for the external security systems and room guards, as well as the maintenance of all the building’s security systems and fire-extinction systems.
This department focuses on the preventative and corrective maintenance of the building, the installation and taking-down of exhibitions and, in general, all the necessary internal services. It is also responsible for the maintenance of the computer system, aiming to ensure an optimum functioning of the Museum’s website and its reliability, functionality and user privacy. It coordinates and controls the cleaning services, switchboard and reception.
